Acoustic Partitions: How Workstation Panels Fix Office Focus
The evidence on open-plan noise, and a working spec — panel heights in mm, fabric or laminate, layout rules — for workstation panels made to order in Selangor.
Noise, far more than layout, is the reason people can’t concentrate in an open-plan office. Fabric-faced workstation panel systems fix this by absorbing speech energy at the desk, before it travels across the floor. The four decisions that matter are panel height, panel face material, how the panels are arranged, and whether the system can be re-planned later. Budget is a long way down the list.
The focus problem is measurable, and it is about sound
Ask a Malaysian office manager what is wrong with their floor and you will usually hear about layout. The people sitting on it will tell you about noise; the research sides with the staff.
Gensler’s Global Workplace Survey 2024, covering 16,040 workers across 15 countries, found that 70% of employees experience regular disruption from conversation or ambient noise in open-plan environments. Jabra’s Sound Better 2024 study, surveying 2,000 workers across the US, UK, Germany and France, put numbers on the consequence: 47% identified noise as a major stressor or impediment to concentration, and 63% said noisy environments made them feel less passionate about their work. Leesman’s workplace benchmark shows the same gap from the other side: acoustics rank among the things workers say matter most to their performance, and among the things they are least satisfied with.
These are global figures; no equivalent Malaysia-specific dataset exists, and none of them are performance tests of a particular product. But the pattern is consistent enough to plan around. And when companies moved to fully open floors, face-to-face interaction fell by roughly two-thirds, while email rose 56% and instant messaging 67% (Bernstein & Turban, Royal Society B, 2018). The reversal isn’t a local quirk — Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region in the office partition market, at 7.68% a year, specifically on hybrid-work reconfiguration (Mordor Intelligence, Jan 2026), and companies that stripped their partitions out a decade ago are putting them back.
For a facilities manager, that narrows the job considerably: you don’t need to redesign the floor. You need to stop sound crossing it.
Why an open floor is acoustically hostile
A typical Malaysian office floor is a hard box. Screed or vinyl underfoot, plasterboard and glazing at the perimeter, a metal-tile ceiling above, and rows of bare desks in between. Almost every surface reflects sound rather than absorbing it, so a single phone call at one end of a bench arrives at the other end almost intact.
Speech is uniquely disruptive for two reasons. It carries meaning, so the brain can’t filter it the way it filters air-conditioning hum. And most speech energy sits in the mid frequencies, exactly where soft fibrous materials work and where glass and laminate do nothing.
The fix is unglamorous: put an absorptive, fabric-faced surface between speaker and listener, at seated head height, before the sound has room to spread.
What a workstation panel system actually does
A workstation panel system is the structural spine of a desk cluster: a framed panel that supports the worksurface, carries power and data through its cavity, and provides the acoustic and visual separation between one person and the next. Unlike a floor-to-ceiling room divider or a glass wall, it counts as furniture: nothing is fixed to the building, and it moves when the team does.
What that buys you:
- A fabric-faced panel with a soft core absorbs speech at source, turning some of the mid-frequency energy into heat instead of bouncing it onward. Two absorptive faces between two people, one on each workstation, work noticeably better than one.
- It also blocks the direct path. Sound is loudest along the straight line from mouth to ear; a panel that rises above seated head height forces it over the top, on a longer and weaker route.
- The third effect is visual. Much of the perceived distraction in open plan is movement in peripheral vision, and cutting the sightline at the right height removes the interruption before any noise registers.

Specifying for focus
1. Panel height
Height is the single biggest lever, and every choice costs you something elsewhere. Roughly:

A frequent and avoidable mistake is choosing one height for the entire floor. Mixing heights by function (high around focus clusters, low around the collaboration bench) costs nothing extra on a made-to-order system and delivers a far better floor.
As a planning number for a typical Malaysian office: 1,200mm is the workable default for general seating, and 1,350–1,500mm for focus or confidentiality zones — measured from the floor, so a 1,350mm panel clears the head of almost anyone seated. These are guide figures rather than fixed sizes; because every panel is cut to order, the height can sit anywhere in between to line up with window sills, glazing mullions or existing furniture.
2. Fabric or laminate
Both finishes are structurally identical. Acoustically they are not. A fabric face over a soft core absorbs; a laminate face reflects. For focus-critical zones, fabric on the inward-facing surfaces does the acoustic work. Laminate earns its place where durability and cleaning matter more than absorption: circulation edges, end panels, anywhere hot-desked.
In practice most floors mix both: fabric where people sit, laminate where people walk.

3. Layout and orientation
Panels only intercept sound that crosses them. Two workstations facing each other across a low panel are still acoustically coupled. Practical rules: face desks away from the main circulation route, close the sides of focus clusters rather than leaving open corridors of sound, and keep printers, pantries and phone-heavy roles physically separated from people doing concentrated work. Panels specified well in a bad layout still leak, which is why the layout plan is worth more argument than the panel spec.
4. Reconfiguration
State up front that the system must be reconfigurable. Panel-to-panel connections, base details and cable routing all need to be selected for it. A team that grows 30% in eighteen months should be a re-plan, not a re-purchase.

Do office partition panels actually reduce noise?
They reduce how much speech reaches a neighbouring workstation, which is the noise that damages concentration. What panel height should I choose for a focus-heavy office?
Work back from what each team actually does; picking one number for the whole floor is the usual mistake. Anyone on the phone all day, or doing sustained heads-down work, wants a panel that clears seated head height, because that is where the direct sound path and the sightline both get cut. Teams that talk to each other constantly are happier lower, around seated eye level. Most Malaysian offices end up running two or three heights on one floor, and since everything is cut to order, that costs no more than ordering a single height everywhere. Is a fabric or laminate panel finish better for acoustics?
Fabric, wherever someone is trying to concentrate. The soft core behind a fabric face takes energy out of the sound; a laminate face sends it straight back into the room. Laminate is the right call on the surfaces that get knocked, leaned on and wiped down every day. All three thicknesses (UA40, UA60 and UA80) come in either finish on the same frame, so a floor can carry fabric through the focus zones and laminate everywhere else without any change to module widths, and the panels still line up.
Can workstation panels be reconfigured when the team changes?
Yes, if you say so at the design stage — the connectors, bases and cable routes are chosen differently when reconfiguration is a requirement. Panels specified that way come apart and go back together in a new arrangement without demolition, and we can manufacture matching panels years later because your drawings stay with the factory.
